MUSEUM COLLECTION OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF VEJER
Located in the old Casa Palacio Marqués de Tamarón, built in the 18th century, this recently created museum space contains 13 rooms, where a sample of archaeological collections are exhibited to learn about the historical evolution of the municipality from the Palaeolithic period to the present day.
It also has fine arts rooms, where the Julia Relinque collection is particularly noteworthy.
The building itself, which was renovated a few years ago, is well worth a visit. It has a trapezoidal floor plan that contrasts with the harmonious Neoclassical façade.
The façade of the ground floor and mezzanine is formed by a series of attached pilasters that frame the openings of the doorway and the cantilevered windows. A cornice separates the upper section, which has a central balcony over the doors and windows.
The latticework adds harmony to the ensemble of openings and blind walls.
It is accessed through a vestibule to a courtyard with four semicircular arches resting on four columns. Its central palm tree, a common indoor Kentia, planted in 1879, exceeds the height of the building.
SAN FRANCISCO MUNICIPAL CINEMA-THEATRE
It is Vejer’s main cultural centre. It offers a varied theatre programme.
Its stage has hosted from theatrical performances starring neighbourhood groups to renowned actors such as José Sacristán, Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, Rosario Pardo, Cristina Medina, Ana Fernández, Alex O’dogherty and Secún de la Rosa, among others.
In addition, since 2016 this space has been equipped with a state-of-the-art digital projector that is allowing the best first-run films to be broadcast.
MUNICIPAL PUBLIC LIBRARY 'POETA FRANCISCO BASALLOTE'.
Located 5 km from Vejer, the NMAC Montenmedio Contemporary Art Foundation is a unique space in Spain where a dialogue is established between contemporary art and nature in perfect harmony.
The aim of the NMAC Foundation is to invite international artists to carry out specific artistic projects that are in tune with the landscape by studying the region through its history, geography and society.
This open-air museum houses works by internationally renowned artists: Susana Solano, James Turrell, MP&Rosado,…
NMAC is a cultural reference in Southern Europe not only for its collection, but also for its educational and cultural programming.
EVENING OF CLASSICAL THEATRE
Held in the incomparable setting of the walled enclosure of La Segur, this space allows the spectator to go back to past times with plays such as The Trojans, performed last summer.
The commitment to shows such as La verbena de la Paloma, El Barbero de Sevilla or La corte del Faraón with companies of the stature of Teatro Lírico Andaluz has allowed the population of Vejer to take an unusual interest in this genre.
EVENING OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
The courtyard of the castle hosts a classical music concert every summer, with sublime performances by the quintet The Soloists of London or the Almaclara quartet in collaboration with the violinist Maria Rosaria D’Aprile. It is also committed to young local talent.
FLAMENCO ON THE BALCONIES
Organised by the Delegación Municipal de Fiestas, every Thursday in July, a balcony becomes the protagonist of an unmissable event for lovers of this musical genre which has been declared a World Heritage Site.
During the school period, the youngest children have a regular appointment at the Public Library with a reading promotion programme, where activities such as storytelling, creative workshops or puppets are carried out as a strategy to bring children closer to the world of books.
GATHERINGS IN VEJER
CHILDREN'S AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S BOOK FAIR
In collaboration with the ANAYA Group, this fair is the only one of its kind in Andalusia with this pre-Christmas theme. During the days of the festival, there are theatres, workshops, storytelling and book presentations, as well as the traditional book sale.
In the summer of 2018, summer cinema was broadcast at Playa El Palmar every Wednesday in July. Films are shown there in a paradisiacal setting, on the sandy beach, under the starlight and with the sound of the sea in the background.
