Our craftsmen: from traditional craftsmanship to branding with a national and international outlook.

The town of Vejer has always had a quite significant artisanal tradition, although due to the evolution of society, many objects made with palm, wicker… have fallen into disuse.

Currently, the artisan sector in Vejer is very peculiar, as although we still have the traditional crafts based mainly on objects made by basket makers, paper artisans, and potters, it has evolved a lot.

In recent times, companies have settled in Vejer, creating their own products and brands, ideas that were born and/or materialized among our white walls, watching a sunset in El Palmar, or enjoying the wonderful natural surroundings of our hamlets.

These companies have been greatly strengthened by online commerce and have created brands that are very adapted to the current market and with quality products.

These are products that we have seen born, and we see grow every day. It is worth mentioning the large number that has chosen to create organic products.

Craftsmen from the Gift and Home Sector

Artesanías Juan María

The experience of craftsmanship in Vejer de la Frontera

Juan María is a self-taught ceramic artisan with thirty years of experience.

This arose due to the increasing demand from visitors to the old town of Vejer.

His production, with designs inspired by Vejer, using emblems such as the Cobijadas, its streets and corners, panoramas, windmills, etc., is mainly aimed at souvenirs and ceremonial gifts using various techniques such as bas-reliefs, lathe work, cold decoration, and various types of glazes.

It should also be noted that all ceremonial commissions are unique and personalized for events such as trophies, commemorative plaques, souvenirs, etc.

Juana la cestera

Bringing to life a popular tradition that is fading away

Years, centuries, of popular tradition survive in a corner of the street in Vejer de Trafalgar. It is here where Juana handles the threads of our recent history. Her hands skillfully intertwine memories, and from them emerge, as if by magic, baskets and hampers, hats, bags, brooms…

Juncus medullas, willow wickers, palm leaves taken from the earth, stolen from the marsh and riverbed, surrender to the skilled fingers of the artisan.

Like a treasure that survives the rush, the disposable merchandise, and the toxic material with which we unknowingly fill our lives.

She lives off her artisan hands and reclaims for the present and for our children to keep in their memories, a craft as old as humanity.

La Pájara T-shirts is located halfway between Plaza de España and the church of Divino Salvador, in a charming shop located on the corner with the alleys of La Villa with its round window as its hallmark, undoubtedly a place worth visiting.

The food sector

Lomo en Manteca

Our gastronomic tradition that extends beyond our borders

The loin in lard is so important that a day has been dedicated to it: The International Loin in Lard Day, celebrated every year in October, and a street in the center, The Lard-Loin Alley.

It’s perfect in a meal, with some fried potatoes or a salad, in a sandwich, and the lard on a slice of country bread for breakfast will taste heavenly.

The origin of this recipe can be found in the traditional pig slaughters where the formula used to preserve the meat for a long time was covering it with the lard obtained from the same slaughter, thus avoiding the decomposition of the meat or loin, making it possible to have food throughout the year.

A mixture of pork loin, lard, and other ingredients that we invite you to come and discover, for which we provide you with the list of the companies that produce it:

  • Venta Pinto
  • Butcher Antonio Reina
  • Butcher Hermanos Rojas
  • Butcher Luisa
  • Butcher Manolo El Viaje

Tortas vejeriegas, camiones and more

Traditional sweets from Vejer de la Frontera

PASTELERIA LA EXQUISITA AND PASTELERIA GALVÁN SAN MIGUEL, are two companies born from a small business founded in 1942 by José Galván located in the town center.

Since then, they have dedicated themselves to making pastries in an artisanal way. Today, it is their children and grandchildren (3rd generation) who continue the tradition inherited from their grandfather.

Notable is their variety of fine pastries, their tortas vejeriegas, pandurito, the Cadiz nougat, and other sweets depending on the season.

Kombucha

The story of Kombuchería is the story of kombucha in Spain.

Kombucha is a 100% natural beverage, made according to an ancient recipe of tea, sugar, and kombucha cultures.

Its fermentation transforms tea or infusion into a drink with a wide range of vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and essential organic acids. It has been known since ancient times for its slightly stimulating and healing properties.

In 2003, in Vejer de la Frontera, Kombuchería was born, a small family project whose goal was to bring Kombucha to Spain as a natural alternative to conventional soft drinks and as a complement to a healthy and balanced diet.

After years of paperwork and hard work, they managed to officially recognize Kombucha and subsequently obtain the organic certificate.

They have created a strong brand that they started producing in Vejer, where they maintain their organic shop and one of their main local and online sales points, but they now also manufacture it in a warehouse in Conil de la Frontera.

Postres la Cobijada

A company manufacturing and crafting artisan desserts aimed at the hospitality and food sector.

Among its product lines stand out: in delicacies, almond nougat delight on brownie; in desserts, fig flan with Pedro Ximénez; in brownies, toffee with almonds; and in cakes, nougat with toffee and chocolate.

The difference of this company compared to others in the sector lies in the originality, final presentation, and quality of the desserts, as well as in the fact that the products are frozen with a shelf life of one year, so the texture remains unchanged and they stay as freshly made.

Postres La Cobijada markets its products nationally to the hospitality, restaurant, and catering sectors.

In 2008, the Vejer de la Frontera City Council awarded them the Vejer Emprende prize, and the Cadiz Provincial Council the prize for business development and creation.

Patria Pura

Andalusian lemonade

Non-carbonated, refreshing drinks made from organic lemons and various organic fruits. Free from preservatives, colorants, artificial sweeteners, or alcohol and available in various flavors.

They were created by two Danes in love with Andalusia, settled in Vejer since 2005, and running their successful restaurant, Restaurante Patría in Vejer de la Frontera.

The idea was to offer something different to the restaurant’s customers, something healthier with less sugar than conventional soft drinks in the Spanish hospitality industry.

In a short time, it became a success. With only 4 ingredients in the right proportions: water, organic lemons, ginger, whole brown sugar, they obtained the formula for a great beverage and a perfect thirst-quencher.

In the first year, they served them in jugs at their restaurant, but the demand grew so much that other companies in the area were also interested in offering their delicious drinks to their customers, so they decided to bottle them in 250ml glass containers and start marketing them to hospitality businesses in Cádiz.

Although they initially produced the lemonades at their restaurant, they now have a space in La Plaza de la Paz in Vejer where they produce them artisanally. Today, they have achieved the organic product seal, as their lemonades are made with eco-friendly fruit from Andalusia.
