El Palmar, Beach with the Q Quality Label and a wide range Of Tourist Attractions
Vejer de la Frontera has a magnificent beach known as “Playa de El Palmar”, only 9 km from the town centre.
Situated on the Costa de la Luz, on a long, open stretch of the Atlantic, dipping into the ocean at the Trafalgar and Roche capes. Its fine sands and clear waters surrounded by a natural environment have made this beach one of the few unspoilt beaches in the area. This beach offers tourists an almost untouched spot, ideal for water and sailing sports, such as surfing, wind-surfing, water-skiing, fishing, etc., which can be practised all year round. It has the Hygienic-Sanitary services of its category during the summer season, which have made it worthy of the distinctive Q of Tourist quality, such as A.T.S., Clinic Assistants, Lifeguards, Ambulances, first aid posts, showers and toilets; Tourist Services such as a public address system and a tourist information point; as well as numerous Tourist Establishments, hostels, campsites, restaurants and shops, all of them qualified to attend to and satisfy the needs of all those who come to our coasts.
On this beach we have a tower, called Torrenueva, whose function was to watch over the coast.
This type of tower was widely used during the XVII – XVIII centuries, being placed all along the coast of Cadiz, characterising the surveillance as the invasion of pirates and bandits was very probable.
It communicated with the other towers by smoke signals during the day and fire signals at night.
Several streams flow into this area, which originate from inland elevations.
The fauna is typical of these coastal environments, among which the most important species are the lariids and waders, such as oystercatchers, sandpipers…
