Strolling in the streets of the old walled town of Vejer, there are many houses organised around the traditional patios, which show the symbol of an open-door lifestyle. Currently, there are about 300 houses with patios in the town centre. Some of them have been modified, but in most of them we can see the original structure, based on the traditional Andalusian architecture. Many preserve nowadays its well and its community toilet – located in any place of the hallway - although they are no longer used, logically.

The beautiful flowers are the hallmarks of the patios: pottery pots or recycled tins with wonderful decorations house different types of plants.

The origin of the patios in Vejer has not been clearly established or explained, but there were different circumstances by which they were built.

The ‘Delegación de Cultura’ (the Local Culture Delegation) organises a patios contest in spring, which also includes balconies and façades. Moreover, the Tourist Office organises tours to discover different patios of old, traditional houses, and their stories.
